The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has implemented new standards on December 15th, 2016 with regards to how dental amalgam waste is handled. This new standard is an effort made by the EPA to reduce the overall exposure of the public to mercury waste of which the majority comes from dental amalgam waste. Dental amalgam waste produces over 10 tons of metal and mercury waste per year—5 tons of mercury waste alone. Mercury is a potent neurotoxin which enters our waters and is picked up by fish and shellfish which are later consumed by humans. This new effort by the EPA aims to reduce the amount of mercury pollution in an economical and practical way for dental practices.
The ruling itself “requires dental offices to use amalgam separators” (EPA, 2016). If your office currently does not use dental amalgam separators, you are required to comply with these new rules within three years after its effective date. Once installed, your office is required to submit a compliance report to the EPA to show you have met their requirements. For more information on the EPA's ruling, here is their Guidelines page and our one page resource tool.
