Difference Between The Various Waste Generator Categories

Businesses which generate hazardous waste will fall into one of three hazardous waste generator categories. The term generator in this instance is simply used as someone who creates, or generates, waste. What is a Very Small Quantity Generator?

Those businesses which generate 100 kilograms or less of hazardous waste per month; or those businesses which generate 1 kilogram or less of acutely hazardous waste are considered to be very small quantity generators (VSQGs). If your business falls into this category, you must identify all hazardous waste generated and ensure the waste is delivered to a regulated waste facility authorized to manage it.

What is a Small Quantity Generator?

A small quantity generator (SQG) is classified by the EPA as a business which generates over 100 kilograms but not to exceed 1,000 kilograms of hazardous waste each month. Those businesses which fall into this category must meet additional EPA requirements as well as have at least one employee on-site to respond to emergencies.

What is a Large Quantity Generator?

A large quantity generator (LQG) of waste is a business which produces 1,000 kilograms of hazardous waste, or more, per month; or which produces more than one kilogram of acutely hazardous waste per month. As with a small quantity generator, LQGs must meet additional requirements from the EPA which cover how waste can be stored, how long waste can be stored, and how much waste can be accumulated. In addition, a large quantity generator must also submit a biennial hazardous waste report to the EPA.
