With over 123 million Covid-19 cases recorded worldwide since the start of the pandemic and 400,000 of them right here in Maryland and our surrounding service areas, the last 12 months have undoubtedly been tough for us all and changed many lives. Through massive disruptions to everyday life as we all knew it, one year later, we're finally starting to see light at the end of the tunnel with over 2 million vaccines being administered daily in the United States.
As the global crisis began, healthcare and medical fields many of us are in were turned upside down. Whether you were declared frontline workers with what felt like the weight of the world on your shoulders to slow the spread, or declared non-essential and struggled to keep normal operations going, day to day hard decisions had to be made. We quickly recognized these were unprecedented times and needed to be able to support our customers from every angle.
Various BWS customers and facilities experienced an immediate increase in volume of their medical waste as coronavirus spread rapidly, while others were forced to temporarily close their doors. Like many of our customers, we had to navigate through chaotic changes and demands to continue providing service so many count on, whether a customer needed emergency services or a short term pause in service. We were determined to help our customers in any way possible that made their medical waste management services the least of their stresses during uncertain times. In response to quickly evolving changes at the time, we developed online Covid-19 resources and tools, flexible scheduling, extra supplies, extended payment terms or assistance, and more.
While the economic impact of Covid was dictating price hikes and increases, instead we froze our rates to customers. Surcharges of 15% or more were implemented immediately by other medical waste disposal companies to cover masks, cleaning equipment, and other PPE. We knew what many of our customers were facing at the height of the pandemic and were compelled to support them in any way we could. Putting a freeze on all service rates and not applying any new surcharges provided our customers a sense of relief and comfort in knowing that were are their partner through this.
There was never a doubt that we wouldn't be in this fight together. Over the last 12 months we at BWS continued to face each day as it came, took action throughout our operations to assure safe and reliable services, and incessantly reevaluate the needs of our customers and the community.
We've heard so many stories of inspiration and acts of kindness over the last year that give us hope. We are now more than ever closely connected by a health crisis of historic proportions. Our customer have shown an extraordinary level of resilience and fortitude through significant impacts on their businesses and passions. Many of us have taken this opportunity to try things a new way or pivot operations.
Ove the last year while managing through the coronavirus crisis, we also focused on the future and have been able to celebrate several accomplishments and enhancements to our operations that align with our growth strategies. Most recently we installed an industrial-sized medical waste grinder at our processing facility in Baltimore, MD and have started integrating this technology into our treatment and disposal process. During the summer of 2020 we developed an automated sterilization conveyer system for reusable medical waste containers and then implemented the new containers to customers in the fall.
As we look towards the future, people are always a part of our success. We are incredibly grateful and lucky for the men and women of BWS who over the last year became the heroes we all depend on every day. Their dedication, resourcefulness, and willingness to help others has been a significant part of the safe and reliable service our customers needed now more than ever. It was with great gratitude that we recently presented each of our team members a monetary bonus as a 'thank you' for their frontline support. "I have never been more proud of our BWS family," said Trey Krell, General Manager. "Their commitment to our customers and the community and willingness to adapt throughout these unsettling times is truly incredible."
