In early May, the Biomedical Waste Services, Inc. (BWS) team attended the 2022 WasteExpo (an event by Waste360) in Las Vegas, NV. It is the largest North American event for waste management and recycling industries. The WasteExpo is sponsored in part by the National Waste and Recycling Association, which is celebrating its 60th anniversary advocating for the private sector's waste and recycling industries. This year's conference drew in over 12,000 attendees and over 500 exhibitors in the convention hall. There was an electric buzz, call it the "Vegas vibe", in the air full of excitement and enthusiasm to be back together among colleagues and other industry professionals focused on the global future of waste and recycling and being a part of something bigger.
Monday's welcome reception kicked off in a big way with a Welcome Back Bash at the less than two years old, impressive Allegiant Stadium, home to the Las Vegas Raiders of the National Football League. It was an exciting way to begin a week full of waste and recycling innovation, collaboration, and networking.
No time was wasted jumping into a busy week filled with education, training, and development sessions surrounding Technology & Innovation, Operations, Fleet & Safety, Organics Management, Food Recovery, Recycling & Landfill, and Business Insights & Policy. There was something for everyone. Specialized sessions covered specific interests and insights about waste and recycling topics such as legislation updates, technology advancements, zero waste efforts, PFAS, best practices for emerging waste streams, and much more, benefiting attendees with valuable takeaways.
Conference sessions were moderated with guest speakers or panels of industry experts from businesses and sectors across a variety of industries sharing on-the-job experiences, challenges, and knowledge. Having experts from various industries gave conference-goers a unique look into subjects and matters most important to them. Sessions were interactive and collaborative igniting waste management ideas and opportunities.
The always highly anticipated WasteExpo exhibitor hall located at the Las Vegas convention center opened day two inviting eager attendees to connect with waste and recycling product manufacturers, distributors, consultants, and more. In a digital world, especially in the last couple of years conducting so much business virtually, convention-goers welcomed and appreciated the valuable face-to-face interaction. Exhibitors ranged from software and robotics located in the Technology Pavilion, to equipment demonstrations and sales, and fleet safety and training, offering attendees smarter solutions and resources to apply to their operating and sustainability goals.
This is what we live for! Two days integrated into the WasteExpo devoted to our industry - healthcare waste. During the Waste360 Healthcare Waste Conference, a well-thought-out schedule of educational sessions took place for WasteExpo attendees and Healthcare Waste Institute members. Special guests and speakers covered regulatory, legislative, and technical matters affecting the healthcare waste industry. In between sessions, attendees visited a separate exhibitor hall exclusively for healthcare waste industry service providers, equipment manufacturers, supply distributors, and software developers for networking opportunities and making new connections.
During day two of the Healthcare Waste Conference, our very own Eric Kass, Broadview Waste Solutions, hazardous waste division of Biomedical Waste Services, Inc. was co-speaker for the Biohazard and Crime Scene Cleanup Best Practices educational session. Kass along with co-speaker Bob Spurgin, Spurgin & Associates discussed and shared their knowledge about how to prepare for trauma and crime scene clean-ups in the healthcare waste management field.
Trey Krell, Vice President, Biomedical Waste Services, Inc., and member of the Healthcare Waste Institute board moderated "What Are You Talking About? Speaking with Other Generations" alongside speaker Dania Rodriguez, Association of State and Territorial Solid Waste Management Officials, Inc. Many of the guest speakers and moderators are members of the Healthcare Waste Institute and are truly invested in advancing healthcare waste management by developing new technologies and refining regulations that will contribute to a healthier, sustainable environment. The annual Healthcare Waste Conference gives healthcare waste management professionals the opportunity to learn and network with others from across the country focused on the same efforts.
