In late-June, the Biomedical Waste Services, Inc. (BWS) team attended the 2021 WasteExpo (an event by Waste360) in Las Vegas, NV. The WasteExpo sponsored in part by the National Waste and Recycling Association, was originally scheduled for 2020 with several postponements amid the Covid-19 pandemic crisis. Like many conventions and trade shows originally scheduled for 2020, the WasteExpo offered a virtual experience in late 2020 but was eager to return to its traditional in-person event in a safe and organized way.
The week kicked off with a day full of educational sessions for attendees and organizational leaders addressing waste and recycling topics such as legislation updates, technology efficiencies, anaerobic digestion, Covid-19 safety management, and much more. Each session was moderated with guest speakers or panels from businesses and sectors across all industries, local and national, that gave educational conference-goers a dynamic look at matters that may be impacting their operations. Discussions were interactive and insightful creating a collaborative environment.
Day two began with the WasteExpo exhibitor hall located at the Las Vegas convention center opening to attendees and decision makers motivated to connect with waste and recycling manufacturers, distributors, consultants, and more, face-to-face and all under one roof. There were over 300 exhibitors, ranging from truck and equipment sales, to software, robotics, and products, each with their own value appealing to attendees' individual operating and sustainability goals.
Over the course of day two and three, the Waste360 Healthcare Waste Conference, which is the only annual conference in the U.S. devoted to healthcare waste focusing on regulatory, legislative, and technical matters effecting the healthcare waste industry, hosted it's own educational conferences with special guests and speakers for WasteExpo attendees and Healthcare Waste Institute members. The conference included a separate exhibitor hall designated for healthcare waste industry service providers, equipment manufacturers, supply distributors, and software developers where attendees and vendor could make new connections and the opportunity to network.
As a member of the Healthcare Waste Institute, Biomedical Waste Services, Inc.'s own Trey Krell, Vice President and Danielle Fields, Director of Marketing moderated several conference sessions discussing timely topics such as business issues affected by the pandemic, market conditions, insurance trends, and government funding/incentives. Accompanied by Trooper Jim Farley, Nevada Highway Patrol, Krell demonstrated a roadside vehicle inspection in the parking lot of the convention center where many other vehicle and transportation exhibitions attracted conference-goers.

Healthcare Waste Institute members and vendors were noticeably grateful and enthusiastic to be together again. As Krell described, "It's like a family reunion for our HWI members! We are a close group, operating all over the country, all with the same mindset of advancing the healthcare waste industry through technology and regulations that benefit our customers and our communities". The Healthcare Waste Conference educational sessions allowed members, speakers, and attendees to walk away with knowledge and new perspectives, the ability to solve challenges, and discover better solutions for healthcare waste management.
